Dr. Gerstner studied at Westminster College and, the year Gresham Machen died, began to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He pursued doctoral studies at Harvard where he received his Ph.D. in 1945. He also studied at universities in Pittsburgh, Boston, Zurich, Barcelona and Oxford. Dr. Gerstner had a brief pastorate, but soon accepted a position as a professor of church history at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he continued to teach until 1980. Dr. Gerstner was one of the most astute theologians of this century, having thoroughly digested the theology of Jonathan Edwards.
